Putting Drills – The Top 3


Your short game can either make or break you on the golfing green. A major weakness of many golfers are that their putting game is absolutely dismal. The short game of golf can be labelled as “stroke hungry” if you are not good at it. Even if you score is favorable, until you get the ball in the hole, you can be severely tested if your putting is not up to scratch.

Three, four, five or more putts to get the ball in the hole is not only embarrassing to watch but can rip the confidence out of the most mentally tough golfers. Putting drills can help to end this embarrassment and torture!

There are three essentials to focus on during putting drills:

1.Keep the clubface square.

2.Smooth Swing Transition.

3.Control Over Distance.

Drill To Keep The Clubface Square.

Hitting the ball with the clubface open or closed is not a good idea, instead it should be neutral. To get into the habit of doing this, practice the following drill:

Go out to the practice greens and place a ball on the ground. Directly behind it, roughly 12 inches, place a tee into the ground. In front of the ball place a coin at a spot six inches ahead of it. Get into the correct stance, practice moving the putter back until you can see and feel it make contact with the tee, when it touches it start the forward movement and observe carefully to make sure the clubface remains square when it passes over the top of the coin.

Repeat this drill until you understand and feel what it’s like to keep the
clubface square.

Drill To Help Keep A Smooth Swing Transition.

This is a short but effective drill to help you maintain a smooth swing. Set yourself up like you did in the previous drill, by placing a tee 12 inches behind the ball. Don’t worry about placing the coin on the ground with this drill.

Get into the proper stance and practice bringing the club back behind you, once it makes slight contact with the tee, immediately start your forward swing. Once again, become aware and focus on what it feels like to swing in this smooth manner. Repeat this movement going back and forth. Take a mental snapshot of the way it looks and feels.

Control Over A Distance Drill.

Learning to master control over a distance will take a lot of practice as you have to get in touch with the way it “feels”. Hands-on training and regular practice sessions are the only way to do this. But there is one particular drill that can really help to gain distance control.

Grab five tees and space them out at four foot intervals, the last one should be 20 feet from the start. After you have done this, practice over and over again trying to hit the ball to each of the tees in a controlled and directed way. The aim of this drill is to get as close to each tee as possible and get a feel for what it’s like to hit a solid putt.

There are of course many different putting drills available but these three should serve you well as they focus on essential skills that you will need to master to become a great putter. Give them a few weeks to work their magic and you will be surprised at how much your short game has changed.
